Great fuel economy and a luxurious interior make the Fusion Energi an appealing choice, but auto critics agree that because of the Energi’s high price, the less expensive Fusion Hybrid is a much better alternative.
The 2013 Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid is powered by a four-cylinder engine and electric motor that produce 188 horsepower combined. The Fusion Energi also has a continuously variable transmission. At 44/41 mpg city/highway, the 2013 Fusion Energi has excellent fuel economy for the class. Including electric-only driving, the Fusion Energi earns a 100 mpg-e (miles per gallon-equivalent) rating from the EPA. The Fusion Energi can drive 21 miles using only electric power. The battery can be recharged in seven hours using a standard 120-volt outlet, or in two and a half hours using a 240-volt outlet. Many reviewers say the added weight of the battery negatively affects the car’s handling. When the car is running only on electricity, test drivers are impressed with the acceleration from a stop, but they’re disappointed at highway speeds and when passing and merging, saying the powertrain feels lethargic. Critics say the transition between electric and gasoline power sources is smooth.
The 2013 Fusion Energi’s interior receives praise for its spacious, comfortable seats, clean design and high-end materials. Reviewers dislike the trunk because of its abnormal shape and lack of room. The MyFord Touch infotainment system receives complaints for being confusing and hard to use. Notable standard features include eight air bags, leather-trimmed, heated front seats, a 10-way, power-adjustable driver seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 110-volt household plug, an auxiliary audio jack, satellite radio and Ford’s voice-controlled Sync with MyFord Touch infotainment system, which includes Bluetooth, 911 Assist and a feature that reads incoming text messages over the speakers while you’re driving. The Fusion Energi can be equipped with features like rain-sensing windshield wipers, backup sensors, a rearview camera, active park assist with forward sensing system, adaptive cruise control, remote start, a 12-speaker Sony audio system, HD Radio, a moonroof and navigation.
The 2014 Honda Accord Plug-in is an all-new model, and like the Fusion Energi, it has traditional midsize sedan styling and lots of interior space. The Accord Plug-in’s fuel economy and mpg-e ratings beat the Fusion Energi’s. On the other hand, its EV-only range is only 13 miles, compared with the Fusion Energi’s 21-mile range. Charging time for the Accord Plug-in is three hours using a 120-volt outlet, and one hour using a 240-volt outlet, which is must faster than the time it takes to charge the Fusion Energi. Honda says the charging time is measured from when the low battery indicator comes on, and not from a completely empty battery.
The 2013 Toyota Prius Plug-in can only drive 11 miles on battery power, and its fuel economy-equivalent rating is slightly less than the Fusion Energi’s. Conversely, in hybrid mode, the Prius Plug-in has better fuel economy than the Fusion Energi. The Prius Plug-in has a much larger cargo area, but reviewers dislike its low-quality interior materials. The Prius Plug-in’s charging times are very similar to the Accord Plug-in’s, and are much shorter than the Fusion Energi’s.
